CASA of Kent County provides trained community volunteers to advocate for children who have experienced abuse and neglect and are involved in the child welfare system. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge and get to know a child, learn about their circumstances, and gather information from the people involved in their life—including family members, foster parents, teachers, caseworkers, attorneys, and other professionals. They then provide the court with independent, fact-based information and recommendations focused on the child’s safety, well-being, and best interests. While many professionals may be involved in a child welfare case, CASA volunteers bring a unique perspective. They are assigned specifically to advocate for the child and often remain a consistent presence as placements, schools, caseworkers, and other circumstances change. CASA of Kent County recruits, screens, trains, and supports volunteers from throughout the community to serve in this important role. Through their advocacy, CASA volunteers help ensure that children’s needs and voices are not lost in a complex child welfare system and that judges have the information they need to make critical decisions about their futures.
